Paul Johnson
Building on his experience working within the sector, Paul is focussed on developing his coaching practice, in parallel with his mentoring and consultancy work.
A creative and strategic thinker with extensive leadership experience. His portfolio of work includes strategy development processes, grant-writing, facilitation services, research & evaluation projects, working with a wide range of clients, which reflects his broad sectoral interests & experiences: Wexford Opera Festival, Dublin International Film Festival, The Stinging Fly, Scoil Acla Achill, Literature Ireland, Words Ireland, Irish Writers Centre, Aras Inis Gluaire, Friar’s Gate Theatre & Arts Centre, Irish National Youth Ballet and Promenade Arts.
His coaching and mentoring work includes projects with Wicklow County Arts Office, Speckintime Theatre Company, Karen Gleeson (independent artist) and Mariam Ribón (Artistic Director DYDC & IYDF).
He was Chief Executive of Dance Ireland (2006–20) and led on the opening of DanceHouse. Other senior roles include Registrar to Aosdána, and Artists Services Manager with the Arts Council (2003-06). He was Interim Director of Firkin Crane Cork in 2021, leading on a change and transformation process.
His background is in dance and from 1985 to 2002, encompassed working with awarding winning independent artists and companies including Artsource, Brother Films, DCDT, Daghdha Dance Co, IMDT, Druid Theatre, Scottish Ballet Steps Out, icontact, TAG Theatre, theatre artist Sarah-Jane Scaife and visual artist Pauline Cummins.
From 1991 to 2001, he ran his own company MaNDaNCE, creating a range of solo, duet and ensemble works, in collaboration with lighting designer Paul Keogan and composer Eugene Murphy. He is the author of Fine Lines on Shifting Ground: Reflections on a Choreographic Process (Project Press, 2000), documenting his tenure as Choreographer in Residence with Project Arts Centre (1998-2001).
His governance, trustee and national arts policy experience includes serving on the boards of the Arts Council, Dance Resource Base NI, Create-Ireland, Ballet Ireland and Irish Modern Dance Theatre.
He is Chair of Arts & Disability Ireland, a trustee of Performing Arts Forum, and a member of the Expert Advisory Committee (EAC) of Culture Ireland.
